Set in 1950’s Mexico, the Mexican Gothic takes the beautiful and headstrong socialite Noemí out of her upper crust life in the big city and puts her right in the middle of a Gothic ghost story. After a concerning letter from her recently married cousin arrives, Noemí travels to the crumbling manor owned by previously wealthy British expats. The inlaws have secrets, skeletons, and resources they aren’t willing to share, even if Noemí and her cousin’s lives hang in the balance. All the elements of a classic British Gothic novel are woven through a horrifying (but gratifying!) story that comes up against elements such as colonization, eugenics, and falling in love at the worst time. If you love Wuthering Heights, The Yellow Wallpaper and other classics, you’ll love this reimagining of the genre done by a writer who clearly loves it just as much as we do.
