A Library of Things allows you to borrow non-traditional library items such as a telescope, dvd player, or lawn game. Access to these items removes financial barriers, promotes accessibility, enriches lives and learning opportunities, and sparks joy. The Library of Things aligns with the mission of our library — to offer a collection of materials that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of our diverse communities.
Donations and Acquisitions
The Patten Free Library keeps a wish list of items within our focus areas and solicits donations from the community as needed. This collection, while unusual, is a curated part of our larger collection and aligns with our Materials Selection Policy. Items are selected and added to this collection at the discretion of library staff. Due to space constraints, we cannot accept power tools, outdoor gear, and other large items. Please contact a staff member if you have an item you would like the library to consider.
Guidelines for Borrowing and Use
Objects lent out by the Patten Free Library through its Library of Things program must be checked out from and returned to a Patten Free Library desk. A valid PFL library card in good standing is required to borrow an item. Some items are required to be checked out on an adult library card.
Proper Use and Liability
Use care when handling a Library of Things item. The borrower is solely responsible for the item borrowed and will be billed for reasonable repair or replacement costs associated with damage or loss of an item and/or peripherals due to neglect or abuse. The Library has sole discretion in making these decisions.
Patten Free Library is not responsible for any injury, loss, or damage that may occur from use of an item in the Library of Things.
Loan Periods
Library of Things items can be borrowed from 1-3 weeks, depending on the item. As with the rest of the Patten Free Library collections there are no overdue fines associated with the Library of Things. However, if an item is over a week late, a replacement fee will be added to the borrower’s account and the account will be blocked from use until the fee is paid or the item returned.
