Self-Service FAQs

How do I find my hold?

  • Reserved materials will be shelved in alphabetical order with a hold slip that designates the first four letters of your last name and the last four digits of your PFL card number.

How do I check out my items?

  • Scan the barcode of your library card to view your record and then scan each item you’d like to check-out. Make sure you are using the library barcode! The title of each item will show up on the screen when it is checked out. You can also renew items.
  • When you are done click “Sign Out,” and a receipt will be generated to confirm the transaction.

What if I forgot my card?  Can I still check out my items?

  • If you know your card number, you can type it in at the self checkout station.  If you don’t, you can visit the Circulation Desk and show an ID.

Can I pick up a hold for a friend or family member?

  • Only if you have their card or card number.  Items can only be checked out on the same card that placed them on hold.

I’m concerned about privacy.  Does everyone know what I’m putting on hold?  Can other people check out my holds?

  • No.  The code on your holdslip is unique to you, and will only be able to be checked out with the library card you put on hold.  Because your hold slip does not say your full name, your hold list is still private.  Still concerned?  See a staff member to have your holds shelved behind the desk instead.

Does this mean circulation staff are being replaced with machines?  Are staff being cut because of federal funding issues?

  • Not at all!  These new options are an addition, not a replacement. No staff positions are being eliminated due to federal funding issues.  These new options free up circulation staff to have more time to answer your questions and help you find your books.  Because we now have an additional checkout station the lines at both places will go faster.

What if I don’t want to use the self check out?

  • That’s fine! Just like at the grocery store, you always have the option to use a self check out or visit a person.  It’s up to you! As always, our circulation team is ready and eager to assist you at every visit.
