Salem’s Lot is a perfect spooky fall read as it takes place over a few weeks in Sept-Oct in Maine. I began reading it on the day the story begins, September 5, fully immersing myself in the story by sharing in the experience of cooler nights, the change in the clouds in the sky, and the feeling of summer coming to an end. The last breath. A perfect setting for vampires to move in and take hold. SK describes in accurate detail the rapidity with which a town can go from warm and alive to cold and dead, taking the reader along a feverish descent into the darkness of bloodlust. I found myself incapable of putting the book down as the story picked up speed. Once Barlow & Straker had taken hold of the Lot, it was page after page of “Oh no, not him! No! Not her….” as they turned an entire town into a vampire’s den. Salem’s Lot is less about the people in it, but the place itself. A place full of hope, with a past that far outshines its future. A town that slowly fades into history, succumbing to a gruesome death that leaves the reader grabbing for the closest crucifix and wondering if this table leg would work as a stake.
