Book Groups

The PFL Book Group meets on the last Wednesday (unless noted) of each month at 3 pm in the Board Room.  We match a pair of books, one a work of fiction, the other of nonfiction, on a topical and timely theme. New members are always welcome!

Fall 2025

September 24:  Fiction: Oliver  Twist by Charles Dickens; Paired Fiction: Fagin the Thief by Allison Epstein. A paired reading of alternative viewpoints on the same classic.

October 29:  Fiction: O’Caledonia by Elspeth Barker and Paired Fiction: We Have Always Lived in a Castle by Shirley Jackson.  Two delightfully creepy books for this haunted month.

November 26: Fiction: Twist by Colum McCann; Paired Fiction: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad; or Nonfiction: Africa is Not a Country by Faloyin Depo. Theme: Cultural imperialism in Africa.

December 30 (note: Tuesday) Nonfiction: Was the Cat in the Hat Black?  Fiction: A favorite Childhood Book. We explore race, racism and the culture of nostalgic childhood.  Happy holidays!

The OystHers Book Club meets at PFL the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30pm from November-May, and at OystHers Raw Bar & Bubbly at 97 Commercial St during the summer months.  This winter, instead of selecting one book for everyone to read, this group is all about sharing and discovering what others are enjoying. Come ready to chat about what you’re currently reading, books on your to-be-read list, or old favorites you’ve loved (and maybe re-read a few times).

We’ll meet at the tables and chairs outside the Teen Space on the first floor by the windows. Tea will be provided, and you’re welcome to bring your own snacks.  Join us for a relaxed hour of book talk, new ideas, and good company!
