This year, PFL is participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count, a long-standing citizen science initiative that invites you to record the birds you see in your backyard, or chosen location, for a few days and then upload your findings to help scientists gather data about bird populations. It’s fun and helps contribute to the avian scientific community! Prepare to spot and identify your feathered friends with a visit to the library for some bird programs and resources. The Great Backyard Bird Count takes place from February 13-16 and includes programs, displays, a scavenger hunt, and more.

Learn all about these amazing birds and meet some of their owl ambassadors!
A live owl is the highlights of this program, which introduces participants to the owls native to Maine and New England. Beginning with slides and sounds, participants will learn the identifying characteristics and calls of each owl. Then, using talons, wings, and skulls, we explore the adaptations of these silent nocturnal hunters. This program ends with an intimate and detailed look at an owl, bringing these creatures of the night into the light!
